  12. The bridge was built as a result of a competition for designs for a crossing at that point.
    A local wine merchant left money to pay for it: so actually someone DID ask for it!

    Brunel died before it was completed by the way. I used to live in Bristol and I’ve been over the gorge many times, the view is excellent.

  17. I dunno, it’s not like anyone ASKED for that bridge over Clifton Gorge. Sounds like they were just standing around during high tide when Isambard showed up out nowhere. He’s one of those people who has the rare and amazing power to Just Show Up Whenever. Truly Englands greatest superhero.
