Entertaining, challenging and thought-provoking, Howl’s Moving Castle will not be one of the best movie ever launched, but it’s easily probably the greatest of the year. The film opens with the eponymous citadel of the title parting the mists of the Waste in a simple, yet breathtaking introduction. The fortress doesn’t do something on this opening sequence but transfer, however boy, how it moves! A complex conglomerate of disparate parts working collectively in a frenzy of kinetic energy, the fortress is sort of Rube Goldbergian in its complexity, setting the stage properly for the wealthy story of magic to come. The fort belongs to the kind-hearted but self-absorbed wizard Howl, who wanders the Waste in his citadel in the vain hope of avoiding involvement in his nation’s lengthy-working war with a neighboring state.

During certainly one of his brief forays into a metropolis, Howl pauses momentarily to rescue a young girl named Sophie from the undesirable attentions of a pair of amorous soldiers. This, unfortunately, brings Sophie to the eye of the vindictive Witch of the Waste, who transforms Sophie right into a ninety-yr-previous lady out of spite for Howl. Desperate to interrupt the curse, Sophie hobbles into the Waste hoping to discover a wizard or witch prepared to revive her to her former age. She finds herself employed on as housekeeper for Howl and his pig-sty of a castle after which, as they say, the fun really begins.

Miyazaki infuses the movie with two most important themes widespread to his different movies: condemnation of the futility of war, and religion in the transformative power of love. The continuing war – although in poor health-defined in the narrative – continues to develop and gradually draws even Howl into the fray, regardless of his greatest efforts. Fleets of winged airships battle high over the land, and their bombing runs on the cities are so stark and graphic they recall to mind scenes from Miyazaki collaborator Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies. Shapeshifting wizards that began fighting earlier on in the conflict have misplaced all traces of their humanity, turning into grotesque, flying toad-like beings, and Howl himself is in peril of shedding himself to a daunting hen-of-prey form. It is Sophie who intervenes, saving Howl from his determined course of self-destruction, and their feelings for one another develop despite the obvious distinction in age. It’s a state of affairs that might be familiar to anybody who’s seen Miyazaki’s earlier efforts, but even so the director manages to drag it off for the most part.

The struggle, being undefined, lacks the substance that made the conflicts in Nausica of the Valley of the Wind, Fort within the Sky or Princess Mononoke so effective. There’s plenty of flash and bang, sure, however no real meaning behind the carnage. When Madam Suliman acknowledges the pointlessness of the conflict and brings her huge powers into play to try and convey it to an end, she suddenly turns into the biggest villain of the piece – in retrospect – for perpetuating the war for thus long.

As moving as the film is, nevertheless, it is not without some important flaws. Most irritating is the truth that while every magical being Sophie meets recognizes that she’s below a spell, none of them make any effort to assist free her. And despite this lack of assist, because the film wears on the curse appears to lose its power over Sophie at random intervals, a improvement that goes unnoticed by the characters and unexplained by the film.

There’s an entire lot that works in this movie. The world Howl inhabits might simply be an early twentieth century analog of Austria or any number of imperial European countries, lush with pomp and circumstance. The steampunk confection of know-how and magic is a giddy combine, and the steadiness struck feels stable and proper.
